Penylan Singers Community Choir
If you can talk, you can sing
We all know singing is good for our mental health and well-being
It is also such good fun singing with others.
The Penylan Singers is a very friendly, supportive and sociable choir. A mixed voice choir, we enjoy a varied repertoire singing in two, three and four parts. Our songs are in different styles and genres from all periods of music - classical, spirituals, folk, madrigals, show and ‘popular’ songs. We occasionally challenge ourselves singing in different languages.
The Penylan Singers started life as an Adult Education class at the Howardian Centre. We are a community choir and we welcome anyone who wants to experience the joys of group singing.
No auditions
No experience necessary
Everyone Can Sing
We do use sheet music, but you don’t have to be able to read music and you will not be expected to be able to sight sing. A vague knowledge of note values and following the ups and downs might be helpful, but it’s not essential. Many of our members do not read music. We do plenty of note bashing and anyone needing their line recorded for practice purposes need only ask.
As well as having a huge amount of fun, we work on developing vocal technique, breath control and improving our musicianship.
There is a strong emphasis on mutual support. Many lasting friendships have been formed during the enjoyable and sociable sessions. There is always tea, biscuits and chat half way through our rehearsals.
Experience the joys of singing together
Performing is not compulsory or expected. The important thing is to enjoy singing together at the weekly sessions.
However, throughout the year we have the option to perform short concerts with sing-a-longs in local residential and assisted living homes, church halls or similar. Nothing too stressful, we just fun sharing our joy of singing with others.
We perform one charity concert a year for family and friends in St Edward’s at the end of the Summer Term
Rehearsals are at St Edward’s Church, Westville Road, Penylan, CF23 5DE on Thursday afternoons 1.30-3.30pm.
If you or anyone you know would like to join us please get in touch.
